Offering a traditional and hearty, pub style menu with a unique modern flare, The Buccaneer’s Pub & Eatery, and formerly The Fairville Beverage Room, has gone through several transformations over its 50 year existence, but has always remained as one of the West Side’s well known fixtures.
In 1963, Bill and Dan Haggerty saw an opportunity to provide the local West Side community’s working class with its first watering hole and decided to close their popular Main Street West grocery store to set out on a new venture and open The Fairville Beverage Room. Over the years it became known throughout Saint John as a Mecca for live entertainment with a bit of a coloured and notorious past.
In 1984, the aging Haggerty brothers sold their beverage room to two other Saint John brothers, Don and Matt Valardo. Don brought with him a wealth of knowledge in the beer business as a long time employee of Moosehead Breweries, and Matt had been a well-known business man in Saint John owning and operating a number of family owned businesses.
About that time, beverage rooms were quickly becoming more than just places to drink and Don and Matt were determined to provide the Westside community with more than a "local watering hole". In addition to offering a broader, full service menu, they decided to overcome the “rough bar room” notoriety that the Pub had established over the years and set out to clean up the business’s image. When the Provincial Government made changes to the liquor licensee regulations, the brothers were the first in Saint John to offer billiard tables as a form of entertainment in a beverage room. But their plans for transition were not taking shape as quickly as the brothers had hoped for and image issues continued to plague their progress.
In 1989, the Valardo brothers made the decision to change the familiar name from The Fairville Beverage Room to The Buccaneer’s Pub. In the years that followed, Saint Johners grew to know it simply as “The Buc’s”, and as the City’s weekend breakfast destination with such favourites as the Big Buc’s Breakfast, the Breakfast Poutine and of course, Saint John’s original Steak n’ Eggs.
In 2003, brothers Pat and Brian Valardo took over the ownership of the Pub from their father Matt and uncle Don and undertook another bold transition to move away from the entertainment hot spot and build on their weekend breakfast fame by focusing on developing and offering a full service pub style menu in a relaxed, friendly and casual family environment.
The Buccaneer’s Pub & Eatery has come a long way since the days of bikers, beer and burgers. The Pub’s focus continues to stay committed to providing its customers with the best service possible by offering a cross selection of traditional pub classics and a menu that continues to stay fresh, with the goal of enticing their customer’s palate and encouraging new customers to add The Buc’s to their list of “Places to Go” for a bite to eat!
